With climate change the major threat to our planet, we will ensure Britain achieves its Kyoto Protocol targets early. Britain and the EU must lead negotiations for greenhouse gas emissions targets, prioritising inclusion of the USA, Australia and the developing countries.

With pollution and congestion spoiling people's lives, we will promote public transport, especially railways, and reduce domestic waste, promoting recycling.

We will generate 20% of the UK's electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and not replace existing nuclear power stations at the end of their lives. Better home insulation will help reduce energy use overall.

Our policies for Rural Communities provide more affordable homes through new forms of affordable ownership and requiring planning permission before another full-time home becomes a holiday home.

We will:

  • protect Post Offices with commercial services, government information and benefits transactions;
  • offer £1,500 relief to small firms with a rateable value less than £25,000;
  • reform the Common Agricultural Policy to support traditional farming, organic systems, new opportunities for agricultural products and local markets;
  • reform the Common Fisheries Policy to give fishermen and other stakeholders a real say in the management of their own regional waters;
  • ensure fair prices for food, with a legal duty to trade fairly, enforced by the Office of Fair Trading.

    Hunting has been outlawed by recent legislation. I would seek to revise that legislation in line with Liberal Democrat policies at the time, namely: the introduction of Licensed Hunts for the protection of livestock, people’s private property, animal welfare and the right to continue with a much coveted rural pass-time.
