Immigration/Asylum and Travellers

Confusing Immigration with Asylum is, at best, unhelpful to public understanding and, at worst, fuelling public fear.
Liberal Democrats have no time for "the politics of fear" and we seek to provide sufficient resources so that all asylum applications can be dealt with promptly, efficiently and with sufficient knowledge of the back-ground circumstances of most of the World's trouble spots so that applicants' lives may not be put unreasonably at risk.
They should be granted the right to work or given such aid as befits a nation of our international standing.

Economic migrants have been a vital contributory factor to our nation's prosperity over the centuries and will without doubt continue to do so.
However, with the World "getting ever smaller" thanks to improved communications of all sorts and Britain being relatively densely populated, controls - or, at the very least, awareness of numbers involved - must be introduced. Priorities can be given where appropriate to those with the greatest entitlement or potential contribution.

Travellers have for a long time been allowed to flout local planning rules.
This cannot be allowed to continue; but the previous government's removal of the obligation on local authorities to provide adequate sites have severely exacerbated this problem.
